Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Legacy Emissions Commitment
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
In commemoration of GW’s bicentennial celebration in 2021 and as part of a largert set of commitments approved by the GW Board of Trustees following the 2020 report of the Task Force on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Responsibility, GW committed to remove all the greenhouse gas emissions the university has produced since its founding in 1821. GW is among the first universities (if not the first university) to make such a commitment, and at the time of this STARS submission, Google and Microsoft are the only publicly traded companies that have successfully fulfilled this commitment. GW faculty and staff and external partners are collaborating to develop a plan for achieving this bold aspiration. Given that there is no established methodology for calculating historic emmissions prior to the late 20th century, an accounting approach must first be developed followed by a strategy for investing in credible carbon offset and removal projects that allow GW to accomplish the goal.
