GW designs all new construction or major renovations to achieve USGBC LEED silver certification and use the LEED certification system as GW's green building guidelines. There are a number of minor construction projects on campus at any given time that all comply with the University Design Standards that include green design requirements such as low VOC paints, coatings, adhesives, sealants, and carpet; use of recycled and regional materials; LED lighting, low flow plumbing fixtures; bottle filling stations; occupancy sensors; white highly reflective roofs; no potable water for irrigation; Energy Star equipment; walk off mats; collection and storage of recyclables; and recycled construction waste.

A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with green building design and construction guidelines and policies:
It is university policy to achieve at least LEED Silver status for all new construction and major renovations. This has been achieved since the policy was adopted in 2009 by earning one LEED Platinum certification, eleven LEED Gold certifications, and two LEED Silver certifications from USGBC .
