GW's Faculty Senate approved an open access policy for the university on February 13, 2015. Provost Lerman, on behalf of the administration, accepted the recommendation contained in Faculty Senate Resolution 15/2 to establish the open access policy on February 23, 2015. By ensuring that published scholarship becomes publicly accessible, the open-access policy is designed to further GW's commitment to promoting innovative research that makes a positive impact on society. The policy is not designed to have any impact on authors’ decisions about where they publish. Authors will not need to change where or how they publish in order to comply with this policy. The approved policy will grant students, faculty, and the greater public free online access to university scholarship through a Creative Commons Open Access license.

The GW Faculty Senate approved an open access policy on February 13, 2015. The approved policy grants students, faculty, and the greater public free online access to university scholarship through a Creative Commons Open Access license. GW adopted the Electronic Theses and Dissertation (EDT) program in Fall 2007, to allow graduate students to create works of scholarship that are interactive, visually appealing, and readily accessible to a large audience of readers. Electronic theses/dissertations can include content that is not easily integrated into paper-based documents, such as high-resolution graphics, charts, pictures, photographs, and multi-media content. Since the start of the program, over 1,500 theses and dissertations have been successfully processed using the ETD Administrator system. The ETD website includes information on formatting requirements, steps for ETD Submission (including the required forms), and deadlines. Though GW does not yet have an institutional repository, theses and dissertations are in ProQuest.
