The Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education is a national, research-based initiative designed specifically to understand the job satisfaction of instructional and research faculty. Mason is partnering with COACHE to administer the Faculty Satisfaction and Faculty Retention and Exit surveys. The COACHE survey includes specific diversity, equity, and inclusion criteria. The survey results illuminate disparities in perceptions about the academic workplace between faculty of different racial and ethnic backgrounds.

All university employees are invited to complete the Gallup Faculty/Staff Experience survey (formerly Quality of Work Life survey) every 2 years, which includes questions to measure employee experiences with Mason as a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. The survey is all encompassing of faculty/staff life, but asks two questions around diversity and inclusion as it relates to faculty and staff perceptions.

Both assessments for students and staff are used to shape policies and programs for students and faculty/staff. This is an overarching priority for senior leadership as well as University Life, HR, and the Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (formerly Compliance, Diversity, and Ethics). These offices collaborate together to improve on the student and faculty experience as it pertains to creating and maintaining an inclusive campus community.
