University Sustainability internship program

A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):

The University Sustainability office trains paid and for-credit interns to act as educators in the greenhouse and gardens, zero waste, green events and spaces, and other programs, and advocate for/ develop a sustainability culture at Mason. This dynamic group helps the office achieve its mission and goals. While these interns work in different topical areas (e.g. the greenhouses or on zero waste initiatives), all interns focus on peer education. Some of their projects have included leading student tours at the Presidents Park Greenhouse, and educating about sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics at Mason's zero waste Green Game, and waste diversion at Patriot Packout at student move out.

All office interns receive ongoing mentorship from office staff, initial orientation, and professional development opportunities.

Bonner Student Leaders and CECiL Civic Fellows working in University Sustainability

A brief description of the student educators program (2nd program):

The Bonner Student Leaders and CECiL Fellows in University Sustainability work on a wide range of projects, but ultimately most of those projects are educational. Among them are Plastic-Free Mason (an initiative to teach students - and faculty, and staff - about better alternatives to single-use plastic items; a Green Residence Initiative, which educates resident students about sustainable living; and a food justice project, which will help coordinate the multiple overlapping student, staff, and faculty efforts to combat food insecurity among Mason students and the Mason community.
