Does the institution have an ongoing program that offers incentives for academic staff in multiple disciplines or departments to develop new sustainability courses and/or incorporate sustainability into existing courses? :
A brief description of the incentive program(s):
Curriculum Impact Grants look for teams of faculty, staff, and administrators to design innovative multidisciplinary curriculum at either the undergraduate or graduate level. The goal is to help faculty create scaffolded, intentional programs that incorporate experiential learning and build on the strengths across Mason.
Additionally, the Patriot Green Fund and Mason as a Living Lab grants are exclusively awarded to faculty/students who incorporate sustainability research or experiential learning/infrastructure projects that benefit the campus into their existing courses. These grants are available across disciplines and have been awarded to professors in mechanical engineering, computer science, business, environmental science, advertising, and other academic disciplines.
A brief description of the incentives that academic staff who participate in the program(s) receive:
For the above Impact Grants, academic staff receive a stipend and professional development. The professional development workshop provides time and guidance to build a curriculum focused on impact and experiential learning.
For the PGF and Mason as a Living Lab grants, professors receive funding for their research or for projects with students that are implemented on campus. Recognition on our websites, media, digital University Sustainability Map and or on-site plaques are also at times assigned to their work.
