The Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation’s mission is to develop leaders in biodiversity conservation through innovative education, training, and research.

It offers a range of hands-on, interdisciplinary programs in conservation for undergraduates, graduate students, professionals, and high school students.

Smithsonian scientists, Mason faculty, and experts from conservation organizations around the world provide direct connections to the most current teaching, and research work in the field.

Students thrive in a collaborative atmosphere of creative, analytical thinking. It's alumni become part of a lifelong global community that supports visionary thinking and informed practice of conservation biology across a variety of careers and fields.

Launched in 2019, the Institute for a Sustainable Earth (ISE) connects members of the Mason community with others across the Mason community–and with other communities, policy-makers, businesses and organizations–so that, together, they can more effectively address the world’s pressing sustainability and resilience challenges.

2020 Latinoamérica Verde awards

A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:

In May 2020, the Colombia effort of the Honey Bee Initiative was selected as the 15th best overall social and environmental project in Latin America and the Caribbean by the Latinoamérica Verde Awards. Out of the more than 2,500 programs evaluated for the depth and sustainability of their impact, HBI was selected due to the results it has achieved in promoting sustainable development and the conservation of bee biodiversity in the Santander region of Colombia. Through its community-driven development work, HBI is educating future leaders who are ready to advance and execute sustainable, cross-disciplinary efforts that improve our world in tangible ways. This distinct honor serves as a clear validation and recognition both of George Mason’s investment and the HBI’s focus on creating a better today and better a tomorrow through beekeeping.
