Mason Publishing Group hosts the Open Textbook Initiative, which was supported by the Mason Student Government. This initiative encourages faculty to use open source textbooks and learning materials when possible.

The University Libraries are especially proud to support and host Mason English 302 Open Educational Resources, a peer reviewed repository of open educational resources for use in Mason’s English 302 classes. Led by Composition Program faculty and initially supported by a 4-VA Course Redesign Grant, the site allows faculty to easily search, reuse, and adapt the teaching materials developed by their

A brief description of the incentives to encourage the authorship, peer review, and/or adoption of open access textbooks:

In accordance with recent changes in Virginia state law 23.1-1308, Mason is developing a policy to encourage (but not require) faculty to adopt open educational resources in their classes. The University Libraries are working in concert with the Faculty Senate and other University stakeholders to develop this policy which will be released soon.

In the meantime, Mason offers a one-stop shop for information on open-source publishing (https://oer.gmu.edu/). The University Libraries offer staff support and financial resources.
