The Mason Graduate is an Engaged Citizen and Well-Rounded Scholar who is Prepared to Act. The Mason Core is Mason’s general education program that builds the foundation for The Mason Graduate. All undergraduates seeking a baccalaureate degree must complete Mason Core requirements, which includes seven credits in the natural sciences. After taking the Mason Core natural sciences courses, students:
~ Understand how scientific inquiry is based on investigation of evidence from the natural world, and that scientific knowledge and understanding: a) evolves based on new evidence, and b) differs from personal and cultural beliefs.
~ Recognize the scope and limits of science.
~ Recognize and articulate the relationship between the natural sciences and society and the application of science to societal challenges (e.g., health, conservation, sustainability, energy, natural disasters, etc.).
~ Evaluate scientific information (e.g., distinguish primary and secondary sources, assess credibility and validity of information).
~ Participate in scientific inquiry and communicate the elements of the process, including: a) making careful and systematic observations, b) developing and testing a hypothesis, c) analyzing evidence, and d) Interpreting results.

The total number of graduates from degree programs includes all undergraduate and graduate students who completed their degrees, and graduated, in the 2018-2019 academic year. The number of graduates from degree programs that require an understanding of the concept of sustainability includes all undergraduate students as well as all graduate students who have completed the programs that either focus on sustainability or require one sustainability-focused course. The Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning supplied the degree awarded data.
