Sustainability research at George Mason University (Mason)crosses a wide swath as our researchers explore everything from understanding and predicting climate change, to conservation of endangered species, to developing a better understanding of human interactions with our environment, to developing energy alternatives. The University's Research Focus web site identifies specific research communities of practice for sustainability, such as climate change, energy, environment and transportation.

George Mason University's Office of Research and Economic Development invited faculty and centers to self-identify research areas upon which they focus. The website hosting this information also provides means for additional faculty to affiliate. As of June 2011, 125 faculty and 27 research centers affiliated with the Sustainability research focus or at least one of its component communities of practice. An additional 26 faculty affiliated with a related "international development" community of practice.
