Environmental Sustainability Associate in Arts Degree

A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:
The Environmental Sustainability Associate in Arts Degree provides students with an interdisciplinary understanding of the environmental, social, political, and economic connections between environmental issues and contemporary societies. It is a focused path of study designed to 1) prepare students to transfer to a CSU, UC or other four-year institution to major in Environmental Sustainability or related fields; 2) expose students to theoretical and applied environmental studies; and 3) prepare students to research, analyze, and propose holistic solutions for a sustainable future. This degree requires 24-25 units in the major in addition to other graduation requirements.

Second Point of Distinction

2400 Building Construction Waste Diversion + Rainwater Management

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
Diverting a minimum of 65% of construction and demolition waste is addressed in the campus EIR (2017-18) MM-UTL-3. Pre-construction, general contractor submits a construction waste management plan and submits monthly reports with pay applications.

Our most recent construction diverted 69.6% of construction and demolition waste. Additionally, it incorporated passive infiltration measures to increase the permeability of a site that was previously a parking lot (100% impermeable). Permeable pavers and run along the east north and west sides of the building to both break up impermeability in the fire lane and infiltrate rainwater.

The building was also constructed under the 2017 California Building Code, which is in accordance with a multi-attribute green building code.
