4.1 Sustainability culture assessment design and administration

To evaluate the culture of sustainability on Franklin's campus, the Green Office distributed a campus-wide Sustainability Literacy Assessment that included questions regarding the Culture of Sustainability.

 


Description of the institution’s recent sustainability culture assessment findings and any notable trends:
  • 71% of respondents believe that it is "extremely important for universities to take action on climate change."
  • 64% of respondents are very concerned about the impacts of climate change on their future and on future generations, while 36% said that they were somewhat concerned. 
  • In the past year, 21% of respondents said that they had participated multiple times in FUS or community sustainability-related activities, 14% said they participated once or twice, and 36% said they were interested in participating. 
  • 71% of respondents feel very strongly that sustainability aligns with their personal values and lifestyle. 

Is the culture assessment designed and administered in such a way that the results can be used to measure change over time?:
Yes

Description of how the design and administration of the sustainability culture assessments supports the measurement of change over time:

The assessment was sent out to students in the Fall 2024 semester. However, the assessment is designed so that it can be re-administered each year, allowing us to measure changes in Franklin's sustainability knowledge and culture over time.

Description of the process used to measure or estimate the percentage of students assessed for sustainability culture:

We calculated the participation rate for the online assessments conducted via Microsoft Forms by dividing the number of students who participated by the total student body at the time the assessment was distributed. Approximately 4% of the student body took part in the evaluation. Given this small percentage, we acknowledge that the data may not accurately represent the views of the entire student body. For future assessments, we aim to achieve a more representative sample.
