2.1 Student sustainability organization

The Green Office is a student driven hub for sustainability. The office is led by Green Office Scholars and student volunteers. Aimed at consolidating, developing, and implementing sustainability-related initiatives at all levels of the Franklin community, this student-fueled initiative operates within five different branches: campus operations, event coordination, education and research, external affairs and projects, and marketing.

The Sustainable Garden program within the Green Office focus on maintaining the Franklin garden and growing foods in a sustainable fashion.

Students operate a student compost initiative that manage a compost program in the residence halls.

Oikos is a student-led non-profit enterprise, that engages with local partners to give students experience with sustainability-related event planning and management. The mission is to empower students, through activities and projects with institutional support, to transform management & economics education for sustainability.

The Earth Day Summit is an annual conference hosted by the Green Office as a weekend event showcasing multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches to sustainability. By bringing together a wide diversity of academic and community thought leaders, the Summit addresses the interconnectedness that explains why Sustainability is a Shared Goal. The Earth Day Summit includes faculty and students from all academic disciplines, as well as community advocates for sustainability from Ticino and beyond. The weekend emphasizes the unique connections we all have to each other and to our planet. Summit participants also participate in sustainable meals and interactive, engaging activities.

The Franklin program in Master of Science in International Management with an emphasis in Responsible Management and Climate Action includes a practical work component in which students work directly at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research.

FUS also provides employment focused on sustainability through the Green Office. The Green Office hires six scholars, focusing on the following sectors:

The Green Office hosts a campus Swap Shop, where community members can exchange items, share resources, and contribute to sustainable living on campus. The Swap Shop is a student-run initiative that seeks to promote a circular economy and a culture of reuse and sustainability within our university community. Community members can swap gently used items such as decorations, electronics, kitchen appliances, and more.


Description of additional sustainability-focused co-curricular activities for students:

The FUS GO organizes several Student Engagement events throughout the school year. We collaborate with community and campus partners, such as the Franklin Franks Program.  Some of our additional include:

  • Sorengo Neighborhood Clean-up Days
  • Gently Used Item Exchanges and Gear Swaps
  • Green Day Festival (volunteering and field trip)
  • Ticino Sostenibile and Lugano Sostenibile events
  • Volunteering with the World Wildlife Fund and ProNatura

Conservative estimate based on mixed/limited data sources

Narrative outlining how student participation in the institution’s sustainability activities was determined:

Student participation was determined using conservative a estimate based on mixed data sources, taking steps to minimize double-counting. Data sources included staff numbers for student roles within the sustainabilty programs, sign-ups for sustainability events, records of student members of sustainability lubs and attendance at external events where participation was recorded through registration. The final figure was adjusted downward to account for the extent to which individuals may be counted more than once.
