Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Sustainability in Experiential Education Practice
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
FIE's Experiential Education Team source small to medium size companies to place our academic internship students. Moreover, the team is advised to source new companies that have a strong sustainability approach and mission.
Regardless of the field or the student's major, all internship students are required to write a final paper on the internship. Within this they are asked sustainability focused questions. These questions change from time to time in regards to their format, however, they are essentially asked:
-What sustainable practices did their placement participate in?
-How in their opinion could this have been improved or changed?
-What have they learnt about sustainability through their internship? How has this changed and/or improved their knowledge of sustainability in the workplace?
It is worth noting that during an intern's selection process (they are asked to select up to 3 working fields), if they ask to work in a sustainability-focused company then FIE's internship staff will do its best to place the student there. For more information and to view the 'Environment & Sustainability' section of our Placement Area guide, please see below.
In addition to placing our academic students, FIE as a company is happy to sponsor student interns. We have had a number of US based Master students work with us via the BUNAC internship abroad system (www.bunac.org). During FIE's induction process, the intern learns FIE's mission and articulated values and is shown how FIE embeds these practices into staff's working lives, academic programs and the institution as a whole. Furthermore, during this induction, the FIE intern is encouraged to do the same.
