Fordham University's orientation activities for new students are designed to introduce the Jesuit mission of education focused on holistic development, service, and ethical leadership. These principles guide students toward becoming "men and women for others," emphasizing the importance of community engagement and personal growth. Urban Plunge is a three-day pre-orientation program directed by Fordham University’s Center for Community Engaged Learning. The program is designed for incoming students who are proactive thinkers and share a deep commitment to social justice advocacy. During Urban Plunge, students are given an opportunity to explore New York City’s diverse neighborhoods through a lens of community, diversity, and engagement. Has the institution coordinated one or more sustainability-focused outreach campaigns during the previous three years?:
Description of sustainability-focused outreach campaigns from the previous three years:
Part of Fordham University's Student Government is the Student Sustainability Committee. This student led committee is responsible for engaging the student population with sustainability related events and challenges in which they can participate in. This committee has worked to increase the number of recycling bins on campus as well as provided plastic bag recycling stations. With help from the university, the committee has been able to add recycling bins into every student dorm room and apartment on the Fordham University Rose Hill campus.
The Waste Diversion, Recycling, and Minimization campaign was created to reduce the amount of waste from the university. This includes all the paper, glass and plastic that is used by the university. It also served to push students to repurpose the items that they used during the semester and would typically dispose of when moving out. This campaign targets faculty by educating them of the sustainability initiatives that are being taken. This is done through announcements and signs throughout the campus. Further, special placement of the recycling buildings has increased their use. The toner cartridges at the Fordham print shops, as wells as printers and used furniture are recycled or donated to local charities. More than 208,000 pounds of paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and metal are recycled annually.
