This Sustainability Advisory Board functions in an advisory capacity to the President and Provost to make recommendations on the development and implementation of sustainability policies and practices related to operations, education, research, and outreach; facilitate cooperation among campus groups; and recommend long-term goals for the University as outlined in the Strategic Plan.
The duties and responsibilities for the Sustainability Advisory Board are to:
- Foster environmental, social, and economic sustainability across Florida State University
- Develop an action plan for sustainability that ranges across all University activities
- Aid in the development of policy with appropriate departments
- Establish reporting and benchmarking methodologies to track and prioritize progress
- Identify strategies to implement and reach goals
- Utilize sustainability as an advantage for University financial and resource management, recruitment, and research
The Sustainability Advisory Board contains five committees, each focusing on a different aspect of sustainability as outlined in the Strategic Plan including: Climate Action, Waste Minimization, Resources Stewardship, and Education for Sustainability. The Executive Committee serves as a review board of all work by the Sustainability Advisory Board prior to disseminating recommendations to the President and Provost.

A brief description of each sustainability office:

Florida State University’s Sustainable Campus works to educate and engage students, staff, and faculty to set an example of campus sustainability and position FSU as a leader of environmental and social action.
Sustainable Campus’ educational efforts, community outreach, and programs work alongside the greater campus efforts and operations to provide everyone with the ability to develop, apply, and practice sustainability. Sustainable Campus efforts seek to conserve resources at FSU and strengthen the positive impact the university leaves upon the local and global environment for generations to come.
The Sustainable Campus office consists of four full-time staff, two Graduate Assistants, and eight student staff. The student staff oversee peer to peer sustainability education programs for the student body with the management of full time staff. Full time staff develop programs and initiatives to engage the entire campus and Tallahassee community in sustainability efforts.

For the first time, the FSU Strategic Plan includes sustainability, declaring a commitment to climate action, resource stewardship, waste minimization, and education for sustainability.
FSU increased resource allocation to sustainability, including the appointment of additional FTE staff positions.

This position supervises the Sustainable Campus Program Coordinators and works at a high level with senior staff to develop strategies and initiatives to reduce FSU’s overall footprint. This includes: overseeing the Sustainability Advisory Board, collaborating with Utilities to reduce energy consumption, managing department mergers for optimal efficiency, teaching a Leadership and Sustainability course, and perusing sustainability initiatives across campus.

Sustainable Campus Program Coordinators manage the day to day sustainability operations. This includes supervising student programming such as: Garnet and Gold Goes Green, Eco-Reps, reCycle Bike, Food Recovery Network, Organic Garden, and Office of Student Sustainability. Program Coordinators also asses learning outcomes and innovate current programs to develop dynamic student engagement opportunities. Coordinators connect FSU departments and academics to create experiential educational opportunities using the campus and community as a living lab. Through connecting across disciplines, students can engage in hands-on, real world challenges, expanding their education while propelling sustainability forward on campus and in the community.
