Does the institution offer at least one immersive, sustainability-focused educational study program that is one week or more in length?:
Yes
A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution, including how each program addresses the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainability:
The FSU Community Ambassador program provides students the opportunity to become ‘Ambassadors’ to local organizations. Through these positions, students connect local non-profit agencies with the people, programs, and resources on FSU's campus. Each Ambassador works with one local agency for an entire academic year learning the agencies specific service needs. Ambassadors bring knowledge of their agencies to FSU, recruiting, training, and organizing students at the placement site, connecting campus and community. This collaboration creates opportunities for positive, sustainable change within FSU and the local community. Several sustainability issues explored are food justice and security, community gardens, and environmental justice.
Florida State Alternative Breaks (FSAB) facilitates accessible service immersion experiences for students to create sustainable change in partnership with local, national, and international community organizations and their constituents. Active citizenship is informed by social issue education, community-centered service, and critical reflection. FSAB participants will practice active citizenship by grounding their engagement in intersectional and contextual knowledge of a community need by partnering with host community members to create meaningful change. This experience is continued as students are encouraged to engage in sustained social change practices after returning to their home communities.
Florida State University International Programs offers numerous international placement sites for sustainability-related immersive learning. Students select semester, year, spring break, or internship opportunities to experience international sustainability education through a curriculum that is significantly enhanced by the international setting, local resources, and hands on experiences.
