At FSU, sustainable building operations and maintenance include, green cleaning products, recycling, hot water extraction for carpet cleaning, steam cleaning of HVAC equipment using an ISO 9001 certified process, annual aerial infrared for roof assessment, installation of energy saving building features such as motion sensors, daylight harvesting sensors, LED bulbs and long life low wattage fluorescent bulbs, dimmers, time of day scheduling for equipment and lighting, setbacks for non-research areas. All Educational & General facilities are covered by most of these programs.

A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with sustainable building operation and maintenance guidelines and policies:
The maintenance department is responsible for the care, safety, and security of the buildings at Florida State University. Although not specifically addressed in written policies, the practices are as follows:
- Use of more energy efficient replacement components when available.
- Use of environmental friendly cleaning supplies whenever possible.
- Preventative maintenance program to ensure repair of improperly functioning HVAC equipment.
- Steam cleaning for coils (no chemicals)
Real-time and monthly reviews of electrical and water utilities support compliance as well as recycling rates, vendor instructions, and maintenance scheduling.
