Does the institution advocate for national, state/provincial, or local public policies that support campus sustainability or that otherwise advance sustainability?:
Yes

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, legislation, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:

The Office of Governmental Relations is the liaison between all levels of government and The Florida State University community. Special emphasis is placed on monitoring the Florida legislative process, from which the University receives a majority of its funding.

Since 2009, students at Florida State University advocated for the creation of a Green Fee to be assessed at the rate of $0.50/credit hour to support campus sustainability initiatives. After passing through the student ballot process, the initiative went before the University Board of Trustees and was passed unanimously. In the 2013, the initiative, with the support of the university President, went before the Florida Board of Governors, our state higher education governing body, but did not pass.

During the 2011 legislative session, FSU's lobbyist advocated for HB 7151, Postsecondary Education which provides that a university or college system institution may dispose of or make use of the unclaimed lost or abandoned property in a manner that best meets the needs of the university and its students.

This provision will allow for a recycled bicycle program to be used on the FSU campus.
