Eco-Reps are organized student volunteers charged with increasing sustainable behaviors on campus through peer-to-peer outreach and leadership by learning about sustainability & green living; raising awareness; leading by example; inspiring others to take action; networking with University staff & administration; communicating effectively; and creating lasting change.
Projects and events include a biannual food waste audit in the dining halls, creating educational poster displays for residence hall education programs, hosting sustainability-themed residence hall programs, tabling at campus events, and recruiting residents to participate in other Sustainable Campus programs.
Each year, the Eco-Reps and students from the Social Justice Living Learning Community join in a Dinner Dialogue shared program – the two groups come together for an evening of small, facilitated group discussion regarding sustainability and social justice.

Eco-Reps are selected a number of ways:
1. through residence hall government (IRHC) elections
2. through Greek house board appointments
3. invitation by staff or student coordinator

A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):
Eco-Reps are asked to attend a group team-building retreat at the beginning of the academic year and then commit to bi-monthly meetings led by the student coordinator. The student coordinator and invited speakers facilitate group discussions on a wide range of topics, including: environmental communication, recycling, energy conservation, nature, water conservation, food, environmental & social justice, alternative transportation, and leadership. Eco-Reps also have the opportunity to attend group field trips and service activities.

The Eco-Reps program was originally funded through an Innovative Grant, received from the Florida State University Division of Student Affairs to address critical issues in student affairs. It is now supported through the Office of Sustainability (Facilities). The Eco-Reps program is staffed by two coordinators:
Campus Sustainability Graduate Assistant - oversees general operation of meetings and trainings, develops pre & post assessments.
Student coordinator - oversees Eco-Reps recruitment, maintains regular communication with Eco-Reps, plans meetings and outreach events.

A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities (2nd program):
CPE was established in 1970 to provide an alternative to the traditional curriculum taught at FSU. Students wanted to explore socially relevant topics and to foster a healthier philosophy of education through classes in which anyone could teach or attend.
CPE mission:
1. shall be a forum for progressive and alternative ideas on education, politics and the arts.
2. shall provide an area where students and local citizens can initiate and enact new programs which interest them.
3. shall provide guest lectures, movies, classes and other alternative programs to traditional programs.
4. shall provide these educational classes and programs without charging a fee for instruction.
* Participation is open to students, faculty and staff of the Florida State University and the Tallahassee community.
Past programs include: Antroposophy and Bio-dynamics; Urban foraging & plant identification tour; Suggestions for a safe bike ride; The Real Food Challenge; Taboo Experiences series; Activist training, The American electoral system, etc.
