Has the institution engaged in a structured assessment process during the previous three years to improve diversity, equity and inclusion on campus?:
A brief description of the assessment process and the framework, scorecard(s) and/or tool(s) used:
In the Fall semester of 2021 FIU deployed its Belonging Survey to gauge the attitudes, beliefs and lived experiences of the FIU community on issues related to diversity and inclusion. The survey was administered by the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS) and utilized their nationally benchmarked survey tool. The survey asked students, faculty, staff, and administrators about:
- Perceptions of the institution’s climate
- Perceptions of how the institution supports diversity and equity, and inclusion
- Experiences with discrimination and harassment at the institution
Does the assessment process address campus climate by engaging stakeholders to assess the attitudes, perceptions and behaviors of employees and students, including the experiences of underrepresented groups?:
Does the assessment process address student outcomes related to diversity, equity and success?:
Does the assessment process address employee outcomes related to diversity and equity?:
A brief description of the most recent assessment findings and how the results are used in shaping policy, programs, and initiatives:
One of the main findings was that 73% of all responding FIU stakeholders indicated that they were satisfied regarding the survey item: “the extent to which you experience a sense of belonging or community at FIU.” Communities that indicated a level of satisfaction less than or equal to 70% are reported below.
Undergraduate students who self-reported as Asian (67%), having a long-term disability (62%), LGBQIA+ (64%), belonging to our aggregated minority race category (60%), multiracial (55%), as well as nonbinary or transgender (51%).
Graduate students who self-reported as White - Not Hispanic (67%), belonging to our aggregated minority race category (63%), LGBQIA+ (62%), multiracial (54%), and having a long-term disability (49%).
Faculty who self-reported as heterosexual (69%) as well as LGBQIA+ (68%), White – Not Hispanic (66%), women (65%), multiracial (59%), international (59%), belonging to our aggregated minority race category (56%), having a long-term disability (51%), and Black or African American (42%).
Administration/staff who self-reported as having a long-term disability (63%), belonging to our aggregated minority race category (62%), Black or African American (60%), and multiracial (52%).
This one finding regarding sense of belonging has been important in shaping policy, programming, and initiatives regarding the development and support of new affinity groups, employee resource groups, training regarding management and leadership, and other learning opportunities to strengthen campus culture and workplace environments.
Are the results of the most recent structured diversity and equity assessment shared with the campus community?:
A brief description of how the assessment results are shared with the campus community:
Findings were disseminated live and publicly during two hybrid community sessions, one for employees (faculty, staff, and administration) and one for students (undergraduates and graduate). These sessions accommodated in-person and virtual attendance with an opportunity for members of the FIU community to ask questions and provide feedback or comments immediately following each presentation.
