The purpose of the Sustainability Committee is to assist the Office of University Sustainability in executing the mission of the office by implementing initiatives and policies within committee members’ area of expertise while pursuing a Gold STARS rating from AASHE.

Committee members have included representatives from the Student Government Association, faculty, Chartwells Higher Education (FIU's dining services contractor), and various FIU departments including Facilities Management, Human Resources, and Office of University Sustainability.

A brief description of each sustainability office:

The mission of the Office of University Sustainability is to create a culture of environmental stewardship at FIU. In alignment with FIU’s Strategic Plan, the office aims to significantly reduce FIU’s negative impacts on the natural environment by collaborating across university departments, enhancing student opportunities and internships, and developing community partnerships. The office will encourage environmental stewardship by instilling best practices that are sustainable, economically feasible, and socially just.

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:

Earth Week: Annually, FIU celebrates Earth Day with a week's worth of activities. Various environmental student organizations, academic centers, and administrative departments collaborate with the Office of University Sustainability to host a variety of events centered around celebrating the planet and encouraging education on environmental issues.


Sustainability Internship Program: The program provides professional development, education, and training opportunities in sustainability to FIU students. The Office of University Sustainability matches  interns with different projects according to their interests.
