Florida International University (FIU) is committed to producing buildings that comply with sustainable energy conservation strategies and standards equivalent to a minimum LEED Silver Certification. Although building projects at FIU are not required to seek LEED certification, they must be built to at least a LEED Silver level.

Florida International University (FIU) is committed to producing buildings that comply with sustainable energy conservation strategies and standards (minimum LEED Silver Certification). Although building projects at FIU are not required to seek LEED certification, they must be built to at least a LEED Silver level. The Florida Building Code Energy Conservation requirement, which all FIU new construction and major renovation projects align with, reflects many of the LEED Silver standards.
FIU’s environmentally friendly building strategies include campuses located on brownfield sites, constructing new buidings to the Silver Certification standard set by the U.S. Green Building Council, and natural disaster mitigation. The FIU Building Standards include sustainability requirements for new construction on campus including operational efficiency, disaster mitigation and sustainable design.
FIU's first campus is built on the brownfield site of an abandoned airport. The Biscayne Bay Campus is located on the brownfield site of an ill-fated international exposition called Interama. Today, both campuses are models of urban sustainability. In addition, FIU's Engineering Center is located in a complex originally built for biomedical equipment manufacturing and research.
All new construction must meet all FIU hurricane preparedness standards including compliance with county and state building codes. Florida maintains the most robust loss-prevention standards in the United States and the strongest building codes among coastal states. In some cases, hurricane preparedness in new construction enhances sustainability of FIU buildings through resilience.
Notable initiatives include:
The Green School of International and Public Affairs' Building II is energy-efficient, high-tech and built to LEED Silver standards. Utilizing triangulated geometry, its uniquely designed west facade is skewed 30 degrees from due west to reduce the substantial afternoon sun and heat load.
The International Center for Tropical Botany features a native plant landscape with over 900 new tree plantings of over 150 species of native hardwood hammock species. Many of the plants are labeled so that the public can learn about appropriate native plants for their landscapes.
