FIU is a member of the Florida Climate Institute (FCI), a multi-disciplinary network of national and international research and public organizations, scientists, and individuals concerned with achieving a better understanding of climate variability and change. Other FCI member universities include: Florida A&M University, Florida Atlantic University, Florida Institute of Technology, Florida State University, Nova Southeastern University, University of Central Florida, University of Florida, University of Miami, University of South Florida and Stetson University. The FCI is led by an executive board consisting of two faculty from each member university. The two faculty at each university include a university FCI branch director and an additional person selected by the university.

The FIU Environment Forum is a two-day conference that brings together diverse viewpoints on environmental issues. Four colleges at FIU and several departments were represented at the March 2023 forum in addition to speakers from other academic institutions. Prof. Mike Sukop, FIU Dept. of Earth and Environment and Prof. Enrique Villamor, FIU Dept. of Mathematics, participated in the Financial Engineering and Environmental Data Analytics panel. Prof. Alex Erwin, FIU College of Law, was on the Endangered Species Act at 50 panel.

A list or brief description of the sustainability resource center or awards program and submission(s):

A team of FIU engineering students submitted a project titled "Resilient Mast @FIU: Adapting the FIU MAST for Living with Coastal Waters Under Extreme Events" to the Environmental Protection Agency's 2021 Campus RainWorks Challenge. The project focused on mitigating the risk of coastal flooding, incorporating more green infrastructure and reducing urban heat island effects at the MAST building on FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus. Using tools such as FIU's storm surge simulator, software for modeling heat island seepage flows, and running a cost-benefit analysis, the group narrowed its proposed solutions. The project was awarded first place in the Demonstration category.

An FIU faculty member and a student helped lead a coalition of universities invited by the White House to a two-day conference in March 2023 on Campus and Community-Scale Climate Solutions. The program was held in collaboration with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the University of Washington and the University of the District of Columbia. The program revolved around four main themes: making campuses more sustainable, educating students to lead climate-smart industries, universities serving as a proving ground for climate change solutions and successfully working with local communities.
