FIU works in conjunction with the Florida Department of Transportation's South Florida Commuter Services program to promote commuting alternatives such as carpooling, vanpooling, mass transit, park & ride and more. The program is dedicated to improving traffic conditions by promoting alternatives to drive-alone commuting. FIU has had a formal partnership with SFCS since 2013. The partnership includes the creation of RideFlag, a custom rideshare mobile application and use of the SFCS Emergency Ride Home Service.

FIU's Sea Level Solutions Center (SLSC) researchers are advisors to the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact (the Compact) and work with counties to develop science-based plans around exposure data. The Compact unites counties in Southeast Florida to articulate a proactive plan for increasing resilience to climate change. At the city level, SLSC works with experts from the City of Miami Beach to address sea level rise in the area. This project will inform and transform the city’s outlook for the future, serving as a model for building socio-ecologically resilient systems in vulnerable regions globally.
