A brief description of any internal sustainability professional development and training opportunities that the institution makes available to non-academic staff:

FIU has many different professional development programs that are available to all staff. One program that specifically includes all faculty and staff is the Leadership Education Advancement Program (LEAP). LEAP is designed to help FIU’s supervisors learn and practice leadership skills that are crucial to managing and inspiring their teams. Participants must be nominated by their supervisors to attend in the program. The program’s curriculum is highly interactive and focused on key competencies needed to be successful. The LEAP participants collaborate and share their ideas and work that is being done in the university. Sustainability staff can participate and share the sustainable ideas and messages to the other staff that may not be well versed in it. This has proven to be a great networking and education opportunity for the Office of University Sustainability. FIU also offers various online trainings to all staff that vary from topic to topic. Courses alternate and come back into the mix by necessity or demand. FIU has a course called Environmental Awareness that is available to all staff who choose to enroll.

A brief description of any external professional development and training opportunities in sustainability that are supported by the institution :

FIU offers Professional Development Leave to all exempt and non-faculty staff. This was developed to allow those employees the opportunity for professional development, educational travel, study, field observation, research, and/or writing. With that being said, all staff in the sustainability department, sustainability committee, and any other staff interested and passionate about sustainable topics are qualified to apply for this leave and use for sustainability focused workshops and conferences.
