Florida Gulf Coast University has a two-megawatt solar photovoltaic array. The University's total reliance on Florida Power & Light Co. is reduced by 18 percent for the academic core, thanks to the power generated by solar field.

This report does not include data from the solar thermal water heating systems in FGCU's residence halls. The power generated by these panels is not metered or assessed at this time. Likewise, this does not include the geothermal heating and cooling of our Aquatic Center pools or our large residential pool in our South Lake Village housing area.

FGCU is in a subtropical climate where heating buildings is not a significant issue. Heat may come on for a brief time (1-3 hours) on rare winter mornings but never runs for an entire day.

FGCU has a 2 MW solar field. With the exception of solar thermal water heating for South Village dorms and geothermal temperature control for the FGCU Aquatic Center and the SoVi residential pool, FGCU is 100% electric.
