UNIVERSITY DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION COMMITTEE
The Committee is advisory to the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance and serves to promote diversity and inclusion initiatives throughout the University community. Serving on this Committee requires approximately five to seven hours per month. The Committee’s work is important to the University as we strive to create a welcoming and productive work environment for all. The Committee is charged with the following:
• Reviewing and analyzing our campus in relation to diversity and inclusion;
• Creating, developing and implementing workshops, training programs, and strategies to address areas that need improvement;
• Assessing the success/outcomes of the workshops, training programs, and strategies; and
• Recommending ways to establish a sustainable, inclusive campus environment that will result in greater student success (retention and graduation rates) for all students, especially historically underrepresented students (i.e., low-income, minority, and first generation college students).
The members of the Committee have the opportunity to contribute to making our students, faculty, staff and visitors enthusiastic about FGCU’s intentional commitment to promoting diversity. They are part of four different subcommittees, each with specific tasks and charged with assisting in different projects.
1. Diversity Certificate Program
a. Develop criteria for Certificate Program
b. Coordinate programming efforts and create calendar for events
c. Monitor and track progress of the program
2. Marketing/Promotions
a. Develop programs to incentivize participation in events.
b. Create flyers and other promotional materials for events.
c. Measure effectiveness of marketing programs/events.
3. Student Retention/Inclusion
a. Develop programs for students to promote retention/inclusion.
b. Organize events and encourage student participation and feedback.
c. Track, monitor and assess student feedback.
4. Website/Technology
a. Create a University wide Diversity/Inclusion website.
b. Create and manage Diversity/Inclusion social media sites. (i.e. Twitter, Facebook)
c. Monitor and track traffic on the website.

OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL EQUITY AND COMPLIANCE
The Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance (OIEC) supports FGCU’s vision, mission, and strategic plan through the following functions:
Awareness and Training
Conducts/facilitates internal/external training and awareness sessions, seminars, roundtable discussions, tours, conferences and forums that impact equity, and Title IX (consent, incapacitation, sexual harassment) and other compliance matters; Ensures posting/distribution of non-discrimination statement and related information.
Committee Management
Oversees functions of the following committees: Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Advisory Committee; Title IX Advisory Committee.
Complaint Handling and Conflict Resolution
Handles internal/external and formal/informal complaints related to discrimination and other matters of concern.
Equal Employment Opportunity Certifications For Grants
Completes compliance and equal opportunity certification requests for grant applications.
Liaison With Compliance Agencies for Audits/Surveys
Facilitates/coordinates audit processes conducted by regulatory agencies responsible for discrimination compliance matters.
Policy Analysis and Development
Monitors, evaluates, and reviews for relevancy, completeness, and implementation, policies, processes, and procedures regarding equity and compliance and employment-related actions; recommend changes as required.
Waivers of Advertisement
Authorizes waivers that meet a compelling interest or need of the University when filling job vacancies and making multiple-year faculty appointments.

The Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance launched the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program in an effort to make Florida Gulf Coast University a more Diverse and Inclusive community.
The Certificate serves to highlight FGCU’s Faculty and Staff commitment to Diversity and Inclusion, which is an important component of the new performance evaluation for University Staff.
In order to receive the certificate, Faculty and Staff have to attend 5 presentations, trainings, or events throughout the academic year.
Presentations and events cover different areas of Diversity and Inclusion, such as race relations, discrimination awareness, promoting inclusion, adoption of appropriate terminology, educating participants on cultural competences like religion, language, traditions, socio-economic differences, etc.
