Has the institution formally incorporated environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors and/or climate risk as material issues to be considered when making investment decisions?:
Narrative and/or website URL providing an overview of how the institution has incorporated ESG factors and/or climate risk as material issues to be considered when making investment decisions:
Sustainable finance is an increasingly influential force in business and is defined as investment decisions that consider the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors of an economic activity or project. Flinders University is committed to responsible investment and understands the importance of accountability, disclosure and transparency. We are also committed to maintaining ongoing funding to realise the Flinders University 2030 Sustainability Strategy and corresponding initiatives. To maintain an investment portfolio that considers broader ESG factors and aims to screen out, disclose and divest from potential and existing investments based on responsible investment factors, the University will make responsible investments that are aligned with:
- The University’s Sustainability Plan
- Flinders’ strategic plan
- Environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors
- The six UN Principles for Responsible Investment
The University may at its absolute discretion screen out investments where it considers it appropriate to do so on the basis of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors or any of the other responsible investment factors above.
Council, as Flinders University’s primary governing body, has a subcommittee (Finance and Investment Committee) to provide ongoing oversight of the University’s investments, including its sustainability strategy, and with a particular focus on the carbon intensity of the aggregate investment portfolio.

With endorsement from Finance and Investment Committee in February 2023, Council subsequently approved the integration of the six UN Principals of Responsible Investment as a core consideration in the University’s Investment Policy.
