Fleming's Strategic Plan - Our Fleming Our Future commits to creating an Applied Research Development Strategy and to expand our research in ALL Fleming programs, contributing to innovation in Canada across all fields, while also "finding solutions to issues with which our own municipalities and regional are grappling with". Our regions, primarily, Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes, have aggressive and comprehensive sustainability and climate action plans, addressing both mitigation and adaptation to climate change for community resiliency. The plan targets range from ensuring a healthy natural environment to supporting community members who are more vulnerable to climate change, such as seniors and the food and housing insecure.

Fleming's sustainability plan commits to increase the number of research activities. This includes alternative water and wastewater technologies**, aquaculture, and additional areas of research, such as healthy aging, early childhood development with an eco-stewardship focus, and the use of Indigenous Knowledge in solving problems. Fleming has conducted an inventory of current research projects to ascertain the baseline percentage of projects relating to sustainability. This inventory comprises our baseline for measurable progress.

**This builds upon our current research strengths which have focused on alternative wastewater treatment through the Centre for Advanced Water and Wastewater. The Centre conducts world-class research in using the natural biological processes of constructed wetlands to treat wastewater and other contaminants, with expertise in Northern Canadian communities.

Finally, Fleming is a member of the recently designated Peterborough Kawartha and Haliburton Regional Centre of Expertise in Sustainability Education and commits to completing one research project per year. Currently, Fleming is a partner in a multi-institutional, international study in Indigenous education for sustainability and best practices in quality education for Indigenous learners hosted by the UN and the UNESCO Chair in Reorienting Education towards Sustainability (York University).
