Fleming College a Centre for Sustainability Across the Curriculum

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

To increase the accessibility and diversity of sustainability-oriented training for faculty, AASHE partnered in 2017 with 13 Centers for Sustainability Across the Curriculum to offer workshops and other professional development opportunities on sustainability in the curriculum. These Centers were selected through a competitive application process. The goal of the Centers for Sustainability Across the Curriculum program is to accelerate the infusion of sustainability content into the curriculum. Each center is expected to schedule at least one faculty-oriented workshop annually and develop its pedagogy and content for these workshops.
On June 14, 2019, Fleming College hosted a province-wide workshop, “Build Sustainability and the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals into your Course” as a Centre for Sustainability at the 2019 OCUSP Conference. Over 40 representatives from OCUSP colleges and universities participated in the workshop to learn about sustainability and how to embed it into your curriculum (both courses and co-curricular student learning experiences). Participants learned about the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Science and Cultural Organization) model for sustainability, the 17 SDG’s (Sustainable Development Goals), and sustainability in the “living lab”, working with Campus sustainability offices for real-world examples and project-based learning. Faculty and staff from Fleming College, Humber College, and Trent University will share examples of how they have built sustainability into their curricular and co-curricular experiences. Workshop participants selected one of the 17 SDGs and developed a module, seminar activity, assignment or case, etc for one of their courses. Earlier workshops focused on Indigenous knowledge and sustainability across the curriculum and early childhood education with a sustainability focus, attracting participants from institutions across Ontario, and from other provinces and states.

This leadership initiative embeds the UN SDG goals of 4-Quality Education, 16-Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions,17-Partnerships for the Goals.
