Fleming offers Cultural competency (CC) and Positive Space (PS) training. CC is an awareness and information module designed to help employees support diverse students at Fleming College. Through interactive activities, the session will offer an introduction to the cultural competency model that shifts participant awareness inwards to their own cultural lens, as well as outwards to the social and cultural barriers to inclusion. The session will focus on integrating international students into the classroom, but content will be applicable in many areas of cross cultural communication and all service areas. PS training offers students and employees an opportunity to learn how homophobia and gender stereotypes perpetuate harassment and exclusion and create unsafe spaces for people who define themselves differently than “heterosexual”. The program is made up of 3 levels, each one building on the awareness developed in the previous session. The program is open to all students, employees, and any interested community members.
Fleming makes available to all employees a number of cultural/diversity training opportunities.
Accessible Customer Service Training is required for all employees. Diversity Awareness Training, and Cross Cultural Communications Training represent voluntary programs for available employees.
The Frost Campus provides additional training under its "Respect" Campaign.
Finally, the Diversity Office provides a Positive Space Education Program, which seeks to provide a supportive and inclusive environment for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) community
