Institution has identified the presence of two bird species (Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark) both provincially threatened nesting in the open fields on Fleming College's Frost campus

Fleming's Sutherland Campus features a protected woodland area along Brealey Drive. known as the Dobbin Woods. This area including its woods, trails, and stream are designated as "Open Space" by City of Peterborough Official Plan, which prohibits development of the land.
At Frost Campus, while there is not designated "Open Space" in the form of an official planning designation, most of the 168 acre campus is naturalized lands with a small trail system (in addition to a section of the trans-canada trail). The College has worked with the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans to protect the Scugog River area of the campus (a small river that runs through the campus). Additionally, as an applied project, students have completed a comprehensive land inventory of the campus, including noting all natural heritage features of flora and fauna. This information will form part of the campus master plan.
