No
A brief description of the institution’s formal designation:
Fleming College is one of the first institutions in Canada to offer a two- year certificate program to adults with cognitive disabilities, mild intellectual disabilities, acquired brain injury, or other related learning challenges. The Community Integration through Cooperative Education (CICE) program provides students a unique opportunity to continue their education in a college environment to enhance their academic and vocational skills. The core CICE learning focuses on personal development, independence and essential employability skills which include interpersonal and workplace communications, functional mathematics, career exploration and readiness, health and wellness.
In addition to the core CICE curriculum, students choose program electives in an area of concentration from across the college. Some possible areas of focus include: recreational assistant, kitchen assistant, office administration assistant, early childhood educational assistant and hospitality/tourism assistant. If required, course learning outcomes are modified by an Integration Facilitator to match the individual student’s learning style and capabilities.
Our program has a holistic approach to each student’s development, with a strong focus on academics and applied learning experiences in the community. We support students in the following ways:
Providing an inclusive learning experience across all areas of the college
Strengthening independence and self-confidence in order to enhance active participation in the community
Interacting with other students to reach personal, academic and vocational goals
Building workplace skills through academic and vocational (applied learning) work placements
Receiving on-the-job training from leading employers in the Peterborough area
Co-operative Education Experience
The co-operative education experiences in second, third, and fourth semester provide the opportunity to practice essential employability skills such as time management, strengthen independence and self-confidence, and practice and explore vocational goals. The goal of these experiences is to enable students to transition to volunteer or paid employment on a part-time or full-time basis.
