This website contains information, events and resources for staff and students. It is accessible from Fleming College's main home page. The site describes Fleming's Office of Sustainability, Sustainability in Courses, Sustainability in Buildings and houses our Sustainability Plans and Reports and also provides resources include teaching tools, sustainability actions, a newsletter and information on initiatives such as alternative transportation. Sustainability initiatives at Fleming are also reported through the (municipal) Sustainable Peterborough annual report.

The Office of Sustainability has a Facebook, Instagram, YouTube & Twitter page online. They are used regularly to share event information as well as information on sustainable living. On both platforms we share data we have gathered through various student surveys and do our best to engage our readership by asking questions and sharing answers. We share news from the college level up to the international level.

Guide for Commuters 

Does the institution produce a guide for commuters about how to use more sustainable methods of transportation?:
Yes

A brief description of the guide for commuters about how to use more sustainable methods of transportation:
The communting distance to our Frost Campus is 49 kms from the main campus. We have a ride share board available to all students and staff for regular usage. On the board there are posts from regular commuter travel from nearby towns into the college as well as notes on bigger trips across Canada. In addition, the Student Associaton provides information about the inter campus shuttle bus on their website. The Frost campus also provides services and information surrounding the Bike Loan program. Through our website and social media pages we regularly share information on using sustainable transportation, from ride shares to bus services and more. There is also a section of the Residence Green Living Guide that has information about the alternatives to single car transportation. Including info on the bus systems, costs, biking, and walking.

Materials for Cyclists and Pedestrians 

Does the institution produce navigation and educational tools for bicyclists and pedestrians (e.g. covering routes, inter-modal connections, policies, services, and safety)? :

A brief description of the navigation and educational tools for bicyclists and pedestrians:
The Residence "Green Living" Guides includes a sustainable transportation guide for those living on campus. The Office of Sustainability offers cycling route maps during Orientation, Welcome Days and Open House events. Fleming College also takes part in " Shifting Gears" a local alternative transportation initiative that runs through the month of May each year and provides information to the campus community about cycling routes and other alternate forms of transportation. During this month, the main campus also hosts a "2 Wheel Drive" event that provides bicycle maintenance and information and encourages staff and students to ride their bike that day- and every day. The Frost Campus has a Bike Loan program. At the beginning of cycling season there is a seminar on bike maintenance and students are invited to take part in learning how to tune up their bikes for the season. Also available to students from the Bike Loan Program are cycling route maps for the Lindsay area, and a biking safety brochure.

Green Living Guide

A brief description of the guide for green living and incorporating sustainability into the residential experience:
A Green Living Guide has been created for Residences that covers the energy saving initiatives already happening at the residences as well as tips on how individual students could live more sustainably including information on energy and water saving techniques as well as proper composting techniques and proper recycling techniques. The guide also includes a section on what groups students can join, and different funding opportunities for student run sustainability projects. It also encompases a sustainable transportation guide and tips for purchasing sustainable consumer products.

Our Frost Campus Sustainability Initiative also has a facebook page that is regularly updated. In addition, the Office of Sustainability student workers along with programs with sustainability related activities (e.g. Sustainable Building Design and Construction) regularly provide event notices, articles and communications to the Fleming Zone and all-staff communications that reach all staff and students. These articles are often re-posted by our student workers to our Facebook page. A sample of Fleming Zone headlines is provided below to demonstrate the number of sustainability related stories that make it to the publication. The first highlights a sustainable building project constructed by our Sustainable Building Design and Construction students: Library built by Fleming students wins OLA award: The Fleming-built Highlands East branch of the Haliburton County Public Library has won a 2016 Ontario Library Association (OLA) New Library Building Award. Mason Homes partnering with SENRS to create wetland at Frost Campus: Mason Homes and Fleming College are partnering to create a wetland at Frost Campus, which will provide a new home to a variety of native plant and animal species. EVC students team up with Canadian Space Agency: Students in the Environmental Visual Communications program are working with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) on the latest NASA space mission. New pathway to a degree – Indigenous Bachelor of Education: Fleming College and Trent University have signed an agreement that provides a pathway for Fleming students into Trent’s new Indigenous Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) program, a five-year concurrent degree that puts Aboriginal knowledge and perspectives at the forefront of teacher training.
