A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, bills, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:
Fleming advocates for sustainability policies in the following manner: 1) Fleming's Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment (Dr. Brent Wooten) has participated with the Ministry of Environment and the Premier's Office - advising/ advocating on Ontario Water Policy development. Fleming staff are drawn in for policy advice on regular basis. Dr. Wooten also sits as Vice-Chair of the provincial WaterTap, Water Technology Acceleration Project, established under the Water Opportunities Act to promote innovations in water management, treatment and protection in Ontario. Similar partnerships exist within the City of Kawartha Lakes, the City of Peterborough and with Trent University to support water management on a regional basis. A formal multi-sector MOU has been signed between the parties involved to promote innovations in water management. 2) Fleming is an active participant on the Steering Committees for local municipal integrated community sustainability plans (Region of Peterborough, City of Kawartha Lakes) 3) Advancing environmental stewardship through active membership on the City of Kawartha Lakes Environmental Advisory Committee and through partnerships with the local Conservation Authority and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. 4) Advancing enhanced public transportation through the City of Kawartha Lakes transit studies. 5) Advancing sustainability of rural and small urban centres via input on social and policy decisions by Colleges Ontario.
