A brief description of the institution’s sustainability partnerships with the local community:
Fleming maintains a number sustainability partnerships with the local communities in which our campuses are located. Below are several examples:
Fleming has signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Sustainability with the City of Kawartha Lakes (City). The Agreement represents a range of collaborative efforts between College & City in the area of sustainability. The agreement was developed to officially recognize an active and supportive partnership between the City and the College and to benefit the community in key areas: economic prosperity, community and social well-being, and efficiency of organizations. Additionally, Fleming sits as a member of the steering committee for the City's Integrated Community Sustainability Plan.
Fleming is also a "Champion" level partner with Sustainable Peterborough, the regional integrated community sustainability plan for the Greater Peterborough Area, and participates on the Steering Committee.
Fleming's Frost Campus has partnered with the Lindsay-based organization Toward Balance to create and maintain a community garden on the Campus property.
Fleming is a founding member of a community collaborative, C-links (Centre for Community-Based Research and Social Mapping) in the City of Kawartha Lakes. This Centre supports community-based research on issues relating to community sustainability on economic, social and environmental dimensions. C-links is a regional partner with U-links in Haliburton County and the Trent Centre for Community-Based Education in Peterborough - organizations with similar mandates.
One of Fleming's most significant sustainability partnerships in recent years was with the City of Peterborough to construct and operate the 60,000 square foot Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre (PSWC). Built in 2006, the PSWC resides on Fleming College property, and is operated as a 50/50 partnership between Fleming and The City of Peterborough to share cost and facilities. The partnership allowed both partners to meet their facility needs with the construction of a single facility, thereby eliminating the need for additional resources and land that would be required if each entity built its own facility. In addition, the PSWC supports social well-being of both community and college members by facilitating an active, healthy lifestyle. The facility is operated in an extremely efficient manner in terms of water and energy use and is currently pursuing a LEED for Existing Buildings certification.
