Fayetteville State University (University) is committed to being a good environmental steward and proactive manager of energy, water and other natural resources within the University’s control. The University is also obligated to ensure full compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal environmental laws and regulations. Thus, the University has made sustainability a core value of its institutional operations and its planning, capital construction and purchasing practices. In so doing, the University has become a signatory to the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) in which it commits to “modeling ways to minimize global warming emissions, and by providing the knowledge and the educated graduates to achieve climate neutrality.”
The purpose of this policy is to identify who is responsible for the Univeristy’s sustainability efforts and actions and to provide guidance on sustainability to members of the University community.
To the extent funding and resources allow, the University’s sustainability plans and initiatives shall focus on eight primary categories identified below:
-Systematic Integration of Sustainability Principles
-Master Planning
-Design and Construction
-Operations and Maintenance
-Climate Change Mitigation and Renewable Energy
-Transportation
-Recycling and Waste Management
-Environmentally Preferable Purchasing
The Coalition shall have a Steering Committee which shall meet on a quarterly basis. The Steering Committee shall be responsible for guiding, coordinating and managing the progress of campus-wide sustainability goals. The Steering Committee shall provide an annual report to the Sustainability Coalition, the Chancellor’s Cabinet and the Chancellor on the progress made in meeting the University’s sustainability goals.

Members of the committee, including affiliations:
A Sustainability Coalition (“Coalition”), consisting of University administrators, faculty, staff, students and others external to the University, shall be appointed by the Chancellor and responsible for overseeing, guiding, and evaluating campus-wide sustainability initiatives. The Coalition shall meet semi-annually.
Day-to-day operations involving the University’s sustainability initiatives shall be the responsibility of the Sustainability Officer, Sustainability Coordinator and Energy Manager.

A brief description of the sustainability coordinator’s position:
The Director of Sustainability at FSU manages the University’s sustainability efforts, which support the University’s Climate Action Plan- 2012 and he serves as a key member and coordinator on the Sustainability Coalition. Some of the initiatives this position is responsible for include: reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, waste prevention and recycling, green building standards, construction planning, coordination and contract administration, LEED certification, stormwater management, environmentally preferred purchasing, policy development, behavioral change management, student club advisement, related reporting and other duties as needed.
