Fanshawe's Sustainability Action Plan has four cornerstones that are designed to align Fanshawe's sustainability efforts directly with the selected SDG goals and targets. Each cornerstone has a mutual systemic dependence on the others, generating inputs and impacts.

Sustainability Action Plan Conerstone 3: Learning, Research, and Innovation

- Goal: Improve Fanshawe's reputation for innovation, applied research and excellence in learning by developing sustainable development initiatives that promote positive social, and environmental impact in Southwestern Ontario and beyond by Fall 2026.
- Descriptions and Metrics:
- Embed the SDGs into the Signature Innovative Learning Experience (SILEx) and the 7 job skills for the future quick reference guides by Fall 2024. Metric: Quick Reference Guides (QRG) of the SILEx and 7 job skills for the future are aligned with SDG.
- Complete 15 successful multidisciplinary projects (innovation catalyst) focused on SDGs by Fall 2025. Metric: Showcase - published five successful cases

Sustainability Action Plan Cornerstone 4: Community Engagement
- Goal: Improve Fanshawe’s engagement with the external communities by developing strategic partnerships and increasing social, economic, and environmental outcomes in alignment with SDG 17 by Winter 2030.
- Descriptions and Metrics:
- Identify top strategic partners' alignment with the seven SDGs by Winter 2024. Metric: Minimum 3 out of 7 SDGs are aligned
- Establish three new strategic partners for the College by Fall 2024 Metric: Three new strategic partnerships signed
- Fully engage in all criteria (matrix) with 10 strategic partners by Fall 2030. Metric: 100% of the criteria engaged at a minimum frequency of 1
Operations

Sustainability Action Plan Cornerstone 2:
Greenhouse Gas Roadmap and Action Plan: Fanshawe has chosen a baseline year of 2013 and aims to reduce its GHG emissions by 30% below baseline levels by 2030 and 80% by 2050. The strategy includes:
- Conservation & Demand Management: Retrofit and optimize existing equipment to improve the energy efficiency of the built environment.
- Space Optimization & Net Zero Buildings: Optimize existing useable space, and construct High Performance buildings like LEED or Net Zero Carbon buildings as part of campus expansion.
- Fleet & Facility Electrification: Reduce the use of natural gas, gasoline and diesel in college operations and replace or convert fossil fuel burning equipment to electricity.
- Renewable Energy: Generate and use more renewable power on campus such as solar and geothermal.

Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan: This Plan outlines an annual implementation of EMOs, consisting of capital initiatives, retro commissioning, renewable energy generation and harvesting, and further enhancements to the Energy Management Information System (EMIS) over the Term of the Plan, commencing in 2019 with the target year being year ending 2023 for verification of performance. The proposed EMOs are projected to avoid overall net electrical and natural gas usage by 5% and 16% respectively over the Baseline (2023 Projected). The overall net energy avoidance is projected to be 10%, which is made up of 8% avoidance in energy usage plus 2% from renewable energy generation offsets.

Sustainability Action Plan Cornerstone 1: Leadership and Culture
- Goal: Establish sustainability as a priority for the College and foster leaders to demonstrate accountability, decision making and action through a sustainable lens by Winter 2026.
- Descriptions and Metrics:
- Sign SDG Accord to report, commit and embrace social and environmental sustainability by Winter 2024. Metric: SDG Accord signed and reported;
- Create an SDG leadership toolkit to help leaders implement sustainability in their teams. Metric: One toolkit with a minimum of 3 resources created. One training workshop is included in the toolkit;
- Incorporate social and environmental sustainability as a performance criteria for management and leadership positions in the College. Metric: 15% into the leadership competency framework (Emerging leadership expectations) incorporate sustainability

Fanshawe defines sustainability as being socially, environmentally, and economically responsible in meeting the needs of today’s generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Incorporating these three elements will support human well-being, environmental health and economic prosperity over the long-term and ensure Fanshawe is accountable for daily actions and operations.

Fanshawe College signed the Pan Canadian Protocol for Sustainability in 2009. Colleges that sign the Protocol agree to provide leadership to their internal and external communities and to maximize their contribution to a sustainable future. It enables institutions to develop policies and practices consistent with their unique circumstances and capabilities.
In 2022, Fanshawe signed both the Scarborough Charter on Anti-Black Racism and Inclusion in Canadian Higher Education and the Federal Dimensions Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Charter.

In 2024, Fanshawe's President Peter Devlin signed the CICan SDG Accord.
Fanshawe is a Participating Organization in the Government of Canada's 50-30 Challenge. The goal of the program is to challenge Canadian organizations to increase the representation and inclusion of diverse groups within their workplaces, while highlighting the benefits of giving all Canadians a seat at the table.
