A brief description of the sustainable operations and maintenance policy/program and/or O+M rating system(s) used:

Fanshawe's guiding documents for sustainable operations and mainentance are the ECDM and Greenhouse Gas Roadmap and Action Plan (GRRAP). These plans apply to all buildings

Fanshawe's Environmental Health, Safety, & Emergency Services monitors and maintains indoor air-quality standards, including providing an avenue for reporting/complaints. On their portal, they state: "The College’s Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems control humidity, fresh air and temperature levels of our indoor spaces. During the winter months, the dry air outside and in the summer, the humid air can affect our indoor air quality. Headaches, fatigue, dry eyes, coughing and sneezing are common symptoms when there are fluctuations in ideal conditions. If you experience these symptoms, advise your College Administrator so the source can be investigated by Facilities Operations. EHSE Services may, in the event that Facilities is unable to identify any issues, conduct testing to identify the source of the irritation." If there is a reported inssue with air quality, the EHSE team investigates within a timesly manner.

A great example of in-door air quality control and procedures is our  Hazardous Materials Spills Procedure. If air quality issues arise as the result of a major chemical spill, the priorities are to warn others to stay clear, prevention and treatment of injuries, prevention of environmental contamination and protection of property. If the spill is indoors and large, persons are to evacuate the area immediately, call Campus Security, wait for their arrival, and complete an incident report.

Fanshawe's Operational Planning and Safe Work Programs Standard ensures requirements set out in the College’s Health and Safety Management System (CHSMS) Standards are met through the Safe work Programs (SWPs) and Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) that describe how health and safety activities are to be carried out. Requirement 3 states: SOPs shall be established, where appropriate, for critical health and safety activities related to maintenance, and upset conditions as well as normal operating conditions. It is the responsibility of Administrators to identify critical health and safety activities and assign responsibility for the development of appropriate SOPs, with assistance from Environmental, Health, Safety and Emergency Services (EHSE) or external experts, where required. Informal, undocumented, work practices shall not be relied upon for activities that have a critical health and safety component.

Fanshawe's Competence and Awareness Standard is meant to provide employees with the competencies necessary to minimize risk of injury or ill health when carrying out their work-related activities. The Corporate Health and Safety Management System Overview - Competence and Awareness Guideline provides guidance to Administrators on how to use the information provided under CHSMS Standard 09 Competence and Awareness and the Training Matrix – Administrator Guideline for Employee Health and Safety Training; ensures Administrators of the College and its subsidiaries provide the appropriate training to employees and have an established process to validate employee competency; and structures the selection and provision of OH&S training employees of Fanshawe College and its subsidiaries receive to ensure consistent quality OH&S training that allows them to perform their work while minimizing risk of injury or ill health.

Trainings include: WHMIS, Musculoskeletal Injury Preventation, Scent-free Environment, and many more.

Advanced Business and Industry Solutions (ABIS) is a LEED Silver certified building. Top 4 LEED criteria:

  • Use of energy modelling to show design energy cost savings.
  • Use of local materials manufactured within 800km of the project site
  • Use of low emitting adhesives, sealants, paints and coatings
  • LED lighting with Individual lighting controls for at least 90% of building occupants.

Fanshawe's building automation system encompasses energy reduction, metering, indoor air quality:

  • Temperature and lighting are controlled in all buildings using a combination of both occupancy sensors and time of day scheduling.
  • Energy and water consumption are meterered individually for the majority of buildings on campus. Few buildings are combined. Presently data is collected in a Real Time Operating System
  • All new buildings are designed to be compatible with our automation system
  • Tempterature, humidity and CO2 are monitored as per ASHRAE Standard Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality 62-1999.

Fanshawe's custodial contract stipulates the use of 100% Green Seal rated cleaning products. This applies to the interior of all Fanshawe owned and leased spaces.
