A brief description of the institution’s community garden:
A garden has been constructed on campus that is cultivated and maintained by Culinary Apprentices and 3rd year Culinary Artisans. Crops are harvested by students and used in on campus teaching labs. All practices follow guidelines for organic gardens. Resources used include: Organic Field Crop Handbook by the Canadian Organic Growers, Organic Gardening by Stuart Robertson, and Canadian Organic Growers website www.cog.ca (https://www.fanshawec.ca/programs-and-courses/program/ata1-artisanal-culinary-arts/next-year)
A. M. (Mac) Cuddy Garden: 100 acres of lawn tended under an organic lawn care program since 1992. The garden is also home to many rare and engandered plant species. There is a dry garden that features plants that thrive in a dry climate. A core component of the gardens is that all of the new development as well as routine maintenance is done through the Horticulture Technician program, giving the students real horticulture experience.
The community garden has 16 spots for Fanshawe employees and students. Extra spots are donated to community members. CLT students do a field project in the garden each year.
