Does the institution offer at least one immersive, sustainability-focused educational study program that is one week or more in length?:
A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution:
Students from the Respiratory Therapy program embarked on a medical mission trip to Guatemala in June 2023. The team of students and professors spent a week working in rural clinics like a vaccination clinic, a senior care centre, an urgent care centre and a family medical clinic. The medical mission provides a unique opportunity for students to practice clinical skills while providing care for communities in need. This is part of the program's clinical placement and the program students and faculty also travelled to Central America in 2019 previously.
A team of 14 students and 4 professors spent one week in La Antigua Guatemala working in two rural clinics located on the outskirts of town. The group was divided into two teams. Team 1 worked in a seniors center, providing medical assessment and care, mental health support, as well as education for lifestyle changes, to elderly patients enrolled in a program offered by the Guatemalan government to seniors experiencing extreme poverty. Team 2 worked in an urgent care center supporting the local medical staff in providing assessment emergent care to the Guatemalan population of various ages. Team 2 also travelled in the community with government authorities providing immunizations for children. The work and cultural education the students completed was planned with global citizenship in mind, to ensure the project is ethical, equitable and sustainable. This is in line with at least one of the United Nations' sustainable development goals to 'Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all'. The team plans to return in 2024.
