A brief description of steps taken to reduce hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
Fanshawe College has an Environment Health and Safety Technologist dedicated to managing and reducing hazardous wastes on site. This employee works with Fanshawe College Staff/Faculty to ensure that:
• Frequent inventory checks are conducted to avoid over-purchasing and wasting inventory
• Shelf-life expiration dates are validated, and expired material is removed
• Raw materials are used sparingly and in correct proportions
• Wastes are properly segregated according to reactivity
• All products and waste are inventoried, clearly labeled and appropriately stored
• Current inventories are reviewed for material substitution wherever possible
• Preventive maintenance protocols are regularly reviewed to reduce occupational health and safety hazards (e.g. spills), in addition to reducing waste generation
• Guidance on process modifications can be provided to improve hazardous waste reduction
A campus-wide inventory of all chemicals is maintained and kept up to date. Presently, Fanshawe College is in the process of finalizing a Chemical Management Plan that will control any new chemicals coming into the College. This will ensure that every chemical is assessed for its toxicity, health hazards, volume, storage, safe usage (PPE, ventilation, etc.) and waste generated.
