In 2010, Fanshawe College solicited a Request for Supplier Qualification (RFSQ) to identify up to four architectural firms to become prime consultants for future projects over the next 3 to 5 years. This RFSQ stipulated that although the College is currently not pursuing LEED certification on College projects, it will be incorporating sustainable design principles, initiatives and technologies into every project.
All proponents submitting a proposal in response to this RFSQ were expected to have documented experience with projects demonstrating successful implementation of an integrated design process and sustainable design principles and initiatives (LEED projects included). This experience was required by the company as a whole, the project team, as well as senior staff and corporate partners.
By including this criteria in the qualification process, and having used it as a basis to create the existing Architectural Agreements, the College has ensured that Sustainability is featured prominently in any and all present and future building design and construction projects.

The following list outlines the specifications that were included in the design and construction of Z building, The Centre for Applied Transportation Technologies:
1) Storm Water - Storm water is collected on site in an underground cistern/storage tank for site and roof irrigation.
2) Solar Shading - The building design has strategically incorporated a number of roof overhangs and canopies, as well as glazing orientations to provide solar shading to a number of glazing locations.
3) Glazing - Clear insulated glazing is considered standard. We use insulated, argon filled, and tinted glazing throughout.
4) Daylighting - Offices, classrooms and lab spaces have been positioned to provide significant natural lighting, maximize exterior views for occupants, as well as skylights/light wells to draw light into more interior spaces.
5) Natural Ventilation - Designated windows and skylights are operable to provide natural ventilation, especially in unconditioned spaces.
6) Thermal Protection - The building envelope insulation was increased to 3" (R18) sprayed polyurethane insulation (rather than 2") in the exterior walls and 4" (R 24) polyisocyanerate foam rigid roof insulation (rather than 3").
7) Roofing - A prevegetated modular green roof system was installed in three locations totaling 43,000 sf. The remainder of the roofs are single ply reflective type.
