Large PV Parking Lot Canopy and Forward Capacity Market Participant

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Endicott now hosts a 945 kiloWatt solar parking lot canopy that began production in January 2014 and covers a 255-space parking lot on the outskirts of campus. When completed, this was the largest parking lot canopy PV system in New England. The system generates electricity for about 7% of the campus and is one of the largest installations of its kind in the Northeast. The project reduces regional carbon dioxide emissions by about 900 tons/year and provides the College with power at a constant price for 20 years. Last summer, our second solar array was completed. This 156kW array on the roof of our recently opened hockey rink was incorporated into the rink’s design and construction from the outset and will supply about 15% of that building’s power. The College has sold the capacity of the large 945kW parking lot canopy and the 159 KW Hockey Rink PV system into the regional forward capacity market. This monetizes the value of generating power during the peak power (dirtiest power) times. For both systems, Endicott participates in the forward capacity market -- by contracting with a third party who uses Endicott PV systems to meet some of its capacity obligations in the ISO New England Forward Capacity Market.

The college partners with a third party who participates in the ISO Capacity Market and has obligations that are met, in part, with Endicott's hosted solar arrays. Capacity from solar is an important way to offset the emissions from the dirtiest power sources that generate during times of highest demand. The generation during the highest demand times is measured and payments are issued based on actual generation.
