Endicott completed an evaluation of the feasibility of constructing a Zero Net Energy residence hall. The study examined various design considerations, their cost implications and the corresponding energy generation needed to offset remaining energy use of the building.

The Feasibility Study evaluated the first cost and ongoing operational cost and environmental benefits achieving Zero Net Energy by considering:
• Integrated design
• Building envelope improvements: costs and benefits
• A variety of heating and cooling technologies including
o Geothermal for heat rejection and recovery.
o Heat and cooling reclamation and/or storage
o Solar hot water technology for domestic hot water heating
o Combined heat and power
• Electrical efficiency improvements from:
o Pumping,
o lighting, and
o other building operational power requirements
• Controls for occupant comfort, unoccupied energy use reduction, and building zoning to facilitate partial building closure in low occupancy periods.
• Right-sizing of systems
• Other strategies and the interconnection of various strategies.
