A brief description of how the institution ensures that its lowest-paid workers (including contractors, if applicable) receive sustainable compensation:
Emory evaluates practices in the context of a living/sustainable wage and conducts this annually. Each year, typically in August-September, Emory's Human Resources staff analyzes market trends, survey data, etc., prepares information for Ways & Means, and, in October, presents to them the compensation program design for the following fiscal year. In that analysis, there is a review of the minimum pay rate. Historically, Emory has indexed our minimum pay rate to the HHS Poverty Guidelines for a Family of Four, Contiguous US, and our actual minimum pay rate exceeds that rate. For the 2011 forecast, HHS did not adjust their rate, but Emory did. We manage the compensation of any Emory contractor by having a wage equalization clause in all contracts that requires contractors to at least pay our minimum pay rate. Of the 22,619 employees listed, 15,807 are Emory University employees and contractors and 6,812 are Emory Healthcare employees and contractors. Emory Healthcare follows almost an identical living wage methodology to the University, but the reviewing body is the Emory Healthcare Executive Team. Factors included in pay rate include food and gas projections.
