A brief description of the wildlife habitat program, policy, or practice:
In regards to protecting wildlife habitat on institution-owned land, Emory University's Campus Master Plan (2005) has committed to leave 48% of its 700 acres of land undeveloped. Beginning in 2003, a University policy has required that campus land suffer "no net loss of forest canopy", ensuring every time a tree is removed, trees are replanted to maintain the same forest canopy. The Emory Grounds Department also makes efforts to remove invasive species from the campus in efforts to preserve a native habitat. A record of their progress is provided at: http://www.fm.emory.edu/SACS/Landscape_Initiative1.pdf Established in the fall of 1999, the Friends of Emory Forest seeks to support reforestation and forest maintenance throughout the Emory University campus. The mission of Friends of Emory Forest is to work with the university community to provide forest-related educational opportunities, and to celebrate, protect, and help care for the forested lands of Emory University. Campus Master Plan 2005 Update: • Restricted Land (180 acres, 26% of total campus area). These areas, i.e., stream buffers and floodplains, are precluded from development by law, ordinance, or covenant. • Preserved Land (158 acres, 22% of total campus area). These areas, for example, the forests of Lullwater Preserve and Baker Woodlands, should not be developed due to their unique ecological value and essential contribution to the campus identity and quality of life.
