Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions

Gross GHG emissions

Gross Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions:
Performance year Baseline year
Gross Scope 1 GHG emissions from stationary combustion 4,397.43 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 4,665.78 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Gross Scope 1 GHG emissions from other sources 764.39 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 1,106.85 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions from imported electricity 9,538.06 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 15,803.84 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions from imported thermal energy 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Total 14,699.88 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 21,576.47 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Carbon sinks

Figures needed to determine net carbon sinks:
Performance year Baseline year
Third-party verified carbon offsets purchased 2,549 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Institution-catalyzed carbon offsets generated 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Carbon storage from on-site composting 42.34 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 37.80 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Carbon storage from non-additional sequestration 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent ---
Carbon sold or transferred 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Net carbon sinks 2,591.34 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 37.80 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

If total performance year carbon sinks are greater than zero, provide:

A brief description of the carbon sinks, including vendor, project source, verification program and contract timeframes (as applicable):
Carbon storage from on-site composting represents on-site yard waste composting. The metric tons of CO2 equivalent value was determined using SIMAP. Elon collects and composts 100% of its own yard waste in a facility located on the edge of campus. The resulting compost is then utilized on campus. For this on-site yard waste composting program: the baseline is known, it is additional, there are no known negative secondary effects, it is not reversible and it is not double-counted.
Third-party verified carbon offsets purchased represents: 1500 MTCDE from a landfill gas destruction project in North Carolina [retired on Elon's behalf in April 2021 by ACT Commodities Inc., Climate Action Reserve], 900 MTCDE from a forest improvement project in South Carolina [retired on Elon's behalf in April 2021 through Bluesource, Climate Action Reserve] and 149 MTCDE from a biogas from wastewater project in Thailand [retired on Elon's behalf through the UCapture program in August 2020, Verified Carbon Standard (VCS)].

Adjusted net GHG emissions

Adjusted net Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions:
Performance year Baseline year
Adjusted net GHG emissions 12,108.54 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 21,538.67 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Performance and baseline periods

Start and end dates of the performance year and baseline year (or three-year periods):
Performance year Baseline year
Start date June 1, 2020 June 1, 2007
End date May 31, 2021 May 31, 2008

A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:
FY 2007-2008 is the baseline for Elon's Climate Action Plan and is utilized to measure progress toward Elon's carbon neutrality goal.

Part 1. Reduction in GHG emissions per person
