A brief description of the institution’s methodology for evaluating employee satisfaction and engagement:
Elon University conducts various employee satisfaction assessments.
Employees with faculty rank are assessed through the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) survey, which gathers faculty perspectives on institutional climate, sources of stress and satisfaction, student interaction and teaching methods. Elon's most recent participation was in 2017.
Elon participated in The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Great Colleges to Work For survey in Spring 2016. All employees of the university were invited to complete the survey. This assessment measures the extent to which employees are involved and engaged in the organization and ultimately, the quality of the workplace experience.
The Division of Student Life conducts periodic assessments of staff on topics including satisfaction, sources of stress and soliciting specific suggestions for improvement. The most recent administration of a division-wide assessment occurred during the 2016-2017 academic year. This work was conducted by a working group of student life staff and included representation by deans, professional and administrative staff.
Most recently, the university engaged in a strategic planning process (Fall 2018 - Fall 2019). Through a series of open and invited conversations and an anonymous survey open to all faculty/staff, employees were invited to share their vision for the future of the university.
The Office of Human Resources provides an Exit Questionnaire to employees who are leaving the university. Various departments conduct surveys or ask for feedback to improve services, such as the Office of Leadership and Professional Development.

A brief description of the mechanism(s) by which the institution addresses issues raised by the evaluation:
Survey results are reviewed by the administering department. Recommendations are made and presented to Senior Staff for consideration. For the HERI survey, recommendations go from the Academic Affairs Advisory Committee to Senior Staff.
Results of the Student Life survey were reviewed by the Student Life Assessment and Planning Committee, were presented in a divisional meeting and led to improvements in the transparency of decision making and a review of position descriptions.
The feedback received from the strategic planning process identified areas of opportunity for the university. The new strategic plan includes a section on championing Elon's exceptional faculty and staff.
Exit Questionnaire feedback is collected, analyzed and used in various ways to help improve employees’ experiences, including training needs and employee relations issues.
